The Circus Diaries

Read, Respond, Contribute… How it all works

When this website started, it was a solo experiment in reviewing shows from a circus perspective, offering something different to the shallow hyperbole or dismissive overviews found in the mainstream media; getting under the skin of what works and what doesn’t in circus shows. As it turns out, the experiment worked! People out there DO want to discover the shows, companies and artists that get little critical coverage elsewhere.

Now, with over 5000 visits a month, The Circus Diaries has grown into a platform for other circus practitioners to share their reviews and thoughts, and it’s still growing. Have you seen a show that people need to know about? Are there issues in the circus sector that you want to talk through? Do you have bold new ideas, or a historical viewpoint to get across? This is your place to do just that! Not so keen on writing? Send us a vid and it can go up on our YouTube channel! Get in touch, and our editor Kate will be happy to offer advice and tips if required ????

And if you don’t feel like starting your own conversation just yet, join in below the line in our comments sections here, or hook into our social media channels to be part of an ongoing discussion. You can get all our updates emailed to you directly by signing up as a Patron at

We very gratefully received a grant to make the website more accessible for visually impaired users (launching the update on our 6th birthday in 2019), but we receive no other funding to keep this resource going. That means that, as of March 2024, we have started a trial with GoogleAds. If it affects your experience please get in touch to let us review! Content is free to everybody, but if you value what we do, then you can become a Patron for less than £1 a month (equivalent of $1 US dollar). Just like a magazine subscription, but cheaper – and you’re supporting your circus community by doing so! Click the button below to check out how you can become an official #circushero!
